Can we truly be selfless?
Over the past century the notion of selflessness (futuwwa) and whether it is possible for human beings has been doubted, with some arguments going as far as to say it is nonsensical, immoral & unethical, a definition that has evolved negatively throughout the years.
Dr Talal Al-Azem explores Imam al-Sumami’s classic text, demonstrating how true selflessness can be defined and achieved, through Allah. By passing away lowly desires, through patience and training, these desires transform to adab – where you are no longer being selfless or selfish but rather just being with Allah, a means of achieving the highest form of futuwwa.
We are reminded to take care of the self through Allah, to remove ourselves from this false dilemma created by the modern world, to be confident as Muslims in sharing the true definition of futuwwa with humanity and most importantly that: ‘truly it is in the remembrance of God that hearts find peace’ – (Qur’an 13:28)
